Standing on a corner: Hollowayville

Have you ever stood on the corner of Hollywood and Vine? I now have. Sort of.

Did I take part in a Catholic confession, or get free chicken and beer there? No. And No.

When I go on my many road trips, sometimes I catch a sight that makes me think of a funny pun or circumstance. It gets my mind flowing while driving along a bunch of corn and soybeans.

I have been to Cairo, Geneva, Brussels, Liverpool, Hamburg and Rio. Sort of. But I can honestly say that I have stood on the corner of Hollywood and Vine – a small bar in the tiny Bureau County community of Hollowayville (8 miles either way from Princeton and Spring Valley along U.S. Route 6).

In the picture you see above, I am standing on a corner of its property. The bar itself has an exterior that just screams “small town,” but its owners have done plenty of work inside to make it a nice place. For a buck, you can leave your name on it$ ceiling (ask the bartenders how).

I stopped inside to have a drink on my way from a journey on the Plank Road and in Mount Palatine. Friendly staff and customers. Of course, being a complete stranger, their interest in my stop was a topic of conversation. I shared both of my earlier journeys that day, and my work as a journalist.

Another conversational topic involved the color changing marker board on one of the walls. I will admit: My mind wasn’t all that sharp while reading it (no, I do NOT drink on my trips!). So when I saw the phrases “Tailgate confessions” and “Free beer and chicken,” I had to ask.

They were band names. Clever ones, too.

I asked, “So when is Drinks On Us performing?”

I took two moments away from this stop: The standing on the corner, and wondering about funny band names. I do plan to be back someday with a friend of mine.

Hollowayville has a population of just less than 50 people. The town is interesting to me as it is a name in my family.

What are some of the more interesting local band names that you know of? Comment on this post and let us all know!

(Oh, and before you ask, YES, I have stood on a corner in Winslow … Illinois.)
